TOWARDS A WHOLESOME YAKURR.

This section examined those factors and actions which could be taken by Yakurr leaders, policy makers and technocrats that would enhance our prospects of putting the Yakurr nation on a fast track of development, forge a common formidable front and become a force to be reckoned with, at both the state politic and national economic relations like other nations in Nigeria. The following socio-economic, political and cultural agenda should be put into consideration by Yakurr traditional rulers and leaders of thought. About 500 Yakurr sons and daughters all over the world (USA, Canada, UK, Nigeria etc) have embarked on online discussions under the umbrella of Centre For Yakurr Studies. It is a centre where we study the culture, history, problems, prospects and socio-economic development of Yakurr nation. On Monday 18th July, 2011, we launched a structure known as “Yakurr Be-Ibe”. We discovered that most of the communal frictions in Yakurr was due to the inability of Yakurr people to adopt a structure or umbrella that would unite Yakurr people. Due to a quest for unity and development among Yakurr people, we came out with the idea of Yakurr Be-Ibe to be a catalyst for unity and development. Yakurr Be-Ibe refers to a Pan-Socio-Cultural and Economic Organization of Yakurr people of Cross River State, Nigeria. According to historical research, Ibe was the second ruler of Yakurr dynasty at ‘Akpa’ after the demised of his mother, Her Royal Highness Obol Obia. He proved himself to be a great leader and hero. He held the interests of his subjects at heart and was admired by every Yakurr son and daughter. His subjects were proud to be under his dynasty. Therefore, they regarded themselves as ‘’Yakurr Be-Ibe’’(Ibe’s children) After the death of Ibe, his name was and still been mentioned in various parts of Yakurr communities. Though, some people misunderstood the true identity of Yakurr Be-Ibe to be related to one particular community in Yakurr. Every member of Yakurr nation is Yakurr Be-Ibe. Yakurr Be-Ibe, now conceived to be a Socio-Cultural Organisation of Yakurr people is a joint self-transformation and development strategy to look into the challenges facing Yakurr People, the imperative to draw a mutual development plan with all Yakurr people, communities as well as the Diaspora fully involved. It is a panacea for Yakurr problems. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES (1)Yakurr Be-Ibe as a Pan Socio-Cultural Organization will stand as a catalyst to unite Yakurr people: Yakurr may be divided into constituencies for political and administrative convenience but the people remains one, linguistically, culturally and shared a common destiny. This objective can be actualized through the Annual Yakurr Be-Ibe Lecture. (2)To look into the problem of unemployment and job creation through the Youths Empowerment and Job Creation Organ of the organization. (3)It would minimize the act of communal war-fare as well as the threat of insecurity. At conceptualizing this intellectual meeting, the Initiator of this Yakurr Project searched cautiously for an aspect of Yakurr cultural life that would give a stamp of authority to the whole exercise. And interestingly, we came up with the idea of Yakurr Be-Ibe Annual Lecture which as an intellectual assembly in many areas of our lives would look into the socio-economic, cultural and political problems of Yakurr nation. Yakurr scholars, stake holders in all sectors of the economy at home and in Diaspora, youths and the entire members of Yakurr nation could be invited to this esteemed, historic and life-changing intellectual event to discuss all aspects of socio-cultural, economic and political problems of Yakurr to help improve the standard of living of the people, thereby contributing to the development of Cross River State and Nigeria at large.
